Discover all the wonders of the Chattahoochee River! Created for fourth through sixth graders, the Water Warriors Wander + Wonder will encompass a science program with CRK, a birding hike with Georgia Audubon and a paddling experience with Paddle4Tomorrow and NOC.

Hosted in partnership by Chattahoochee RiverkeeperPaddle4TomorrowGeorgia Audubon, and The Nantahala Outdoor Center Chattahoochee Roswell Outpost, our free adventure begins at 8:45am with group arrival and orientation. Participants will divide into three groups and rotate between our three stations at one hour intervals and then conclude at 12:15p.m. with a boxed lunch.

Learn to Kayak

Participants will be given beginner-level instruction on how to safely operate a sit-on-top kayak, fitted with a personal flotation device, and enjoy a supervised session of kayaking. Paddlers must be able to tread water efficiently at a minimum. Shoes are required while on the water, water shoes are recommended.

Birding Hike

Explore the diversity of birds that call the Chattahoochee River home. From songbirds to woodpeckers to birds of prey, we will look for bird species that live along the river year-round, along with migratory species that only spend the summers in our region. Hikers should be able to walk at least one mile on a level concrete and boardwalk path. Comfortable walking shoes recommended.

Science of the Water

Learn how to measure conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH, and see the importance of each to our watershed. Plus, we’ll explore how to identify macroinvertebrates (bugs with no backbone) and see which ones we can find in our waters.

This event will be hosted at The Nantahala Outdoor Center Chattahoochee Roswell Outpost and advance registration is required to participate. Guardians must register each child individually. You will receive a confirmation email and more specific details prior to the event.

We invite guardians to stay and observe the fun, but participation is reserved for students in attendance. If you are dropping off your child, we ask that you please return by 12:30 p.m.

Please note that out of an abundance of caution, we will require all those in attendance to adhere to the latest guidelines from the CDC. Please plan on wearing a mask if you are unvaccinated against COVID-19 and staying home if you experience any signs of illness
