The inaugural class: RiverTeens 2025

The RiverTeens Story

The RiverTeens program is the natural evolution of Paddle4Tomorrow’s Hike n’ Paddle (HnP) program. As our participants aged out of HnP (ages 8–12), they made one thing clear: they weren’t ready to leave the P4T family. As an organization, we felt exactly the same way.

When we asked our graduates, “What do you want to do next?” the response was swift and certain: “We want to go river kayaking. We’re the RiverTeens!”

With that, a new program was born—defined by the youth, for the youth.

From Vision to Water

Once the name was set, we had to build the structure. Which rivers? How many events? Do we have the gear? And most importantly: How do we fund this?

Through the support of the River Network, in partnership with the US Forest Service Wild & Scenic Riversdivision, we successfully piloted the program in 2025. The season featured three different rivers, including an overnight camping trip on the legendary Chattooga River. The pilot exceeded our wildest expectations.

Measurable Success

The 2025 inaugural season delivered more than just time on the water:

  • First Descents: 12 teenagers completed their first descents on three different rivers.

  • Environmental Stewardship: Applied "Leave No Trace" principles in real-world scenarios and studied local flora and fauna.

  • Citizen Science: Participated in water quality monitoring using Georgia Adopt-A-Stream protocols.

  • Leadership Development: Enhanced teamwork and communication skills through hands-on challenges.

  • The Future: Empowered a new generation of environmental leaders.

What’s Next?

The momentum from 2025 has mandated the continuation of this program. Our 2026 calendar features three additional river trips, including an expedition to North Carolina’s Nantahala River.

Sustainable Impact

We are already looking toward 2027 and beyond. With your support, RiverTeens will continue to develop young people as gifted leaders and environmentalists, preparing them to guide our communities toward a more sustainable future.
